Research about Armthorpe

  • Etymology

The settlement of Armthorpe was first recorded in 1086 as ‘Ernulfestorp’, showing the influence of the Vikings on the region. Its probable origination means outlying farmstead or hamlet (from the Old Scandinavian – Thorp) of a man named Earnwulf or Arnulfr.

Early history

The remains of a Roman village and farm were found on Nutwell Lane and through the centuries Armthorpe was known for its rich farming activities. To some extent the rich crop farming heritage continues today and the area between Armthorpe and the M18 motorway is still dedicated to farming.

Armthorpe (Ernulfestorp) was recorded in the Domesday Book as being the property of the monks of Roche Abbey near Maltby, who had a grange there at which an official resided who managed this part of the estates of the establishment and who was sometimes a brother of the house: they had also an officer called their forester. The parish comprised 3,810 acres (15.4 km2) and included the farms of Holm-Wood and Waterton, the latter of which was long the seat of the ancient family of its own name of whom several served the office of high sheriff and one was master of the horse to Henry V. The village at this time consisted mainly of scattered houses.

Coal mining

During the late 19th and for most of the 20th century Armthorpe became known for its Coal mining and a deep seam Colliery was sunk. The pit was named Markham Main. The mining increased the local population dramatically and whole new housing estates were constructed to house the mining workers. These housing estates were famous for their architectural layout. From the air you can see that the houses are formed into rings or crescents, similar examples can be seen in Rossington.

After the closure of the mine 1996 the area went through deep depression. The old colliery site is now a large housing estate, with a thriving community with parks and tracks for walking and cycling to the local wood.

  • Present day

Today, on average, Armthorpe remains one of the more affluent areas of Doncaster. This information is available via the National Statistics Office data. Armthorpe Average Household Income

Like all urban populated areas, Armthorpe does contain areas which suffer from low esteem. These areas are mainly located in the former pit stock housing with more affluent households being located in the cul-de-sac and bungalow housing stock that dominates the Ward. Armthorpe has a thriving local community with an abundance of shops and amenities. New industries and jobs have moved into the area and are centred around the distribution centres that are located next to the M18 Motorway operated by Global distribution players such as IKEA and Fellowes.

There are plans to construct even more private housing estates in Armthorpe and leisure and water parks to entertain the middle class population. The planned site next to the M18 Motorway will be ideally located for leisure travellers from further afield. Armthorpe is also located around 4 miles (6.4 km) from Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport offering fast access to European business and holiday destinations. One of the planning considerations is to build an Airport access link road from the M18 motorway at Armthorpe directly to the Airport.

The flat farming land and Motorway access has also attracted greenfield industrial and distribution sites for companies such as IKEA and Next (clothing). New technology centres also exist for companies such as Toyota. Armthorpe is surrounded by many tracks through wooded areas such as Shaw Wood, Crowther Wood and Sandall Beat, perfect for exploring local wildlife.

I have changed from my original idea

I have decide to change from my original idea to a different one the reason behind this choice is because i was in a pub for tea and i saw lots of pictures of doncaster in the past and i thought that they looked really good so i thought that it would be nice to do a magazine on doncaster past and present, and to see how much has changed and how much has stayed the same as i think that this would be really interesting and also would be a great way to show doncaster how it was in the past and how the culture was in the past to how it is know and how the culture has changed since then. even though i have changed my idea i will still post my research for my original idea as this could be useful and come in handy as i could do a small part about Armthorpe.

MAGAZINE Review ON SOUL AND SPIRIT

This is a very good magazine and a very good read if you are in to what some people call spiritual mumbo jumbo the picture on the front was of a women who has a mystical look around her but instead of like most magazines the picture being in front of the title it was behind it with the other  writing over the top of it the house colours for the front page of this was black, pink, white and yellow. One of the articles a few pages in and is a regular feature in soul and spirit was your Eastern star’s this is an article about astrology and it’s influence in your life and on your life in the month ahead it also helps you to work out what star you are and where you can find it in the sky, it then tells what your star means for you in the coming month. The layout of the article and the rest of the magazine is very good as it is set out neatly but still in at least two different colours that go well together but are still eye catching. The colours white and black are used a lot in the magazine making the other colours used stand out. This magazine as well as every other episode of soul and spirit has your horoscopes in it and it also says in big black and purple righting what your stars say.  This magazine is also good as it has advertisements on mediums, horoscope experts, psychics and spiritual healing experts. Also it advertise tarot cards for people who are interested and have a genuine interest in them.magcover

i will use this information in my own magazine by making sure that it has colours that make it stand out from other magazines but also colours that make the righting stand out and capture your attention the reason i will use this is because it will make my magazine stand out from other magazines but it will also make my magazine more interesting making people interested in it. i will make the articles interesting because it means that people will become interested and therefor continue to buy the magazine this will achieve two things one it will give the activities and other information i am talking about more advertising so they will most likely end up with more people interested in them and two it will make my magazine more popular as if people are interested in what they read they will tell there friends and family about it making the magazine have more readers.

The basic layout of magazine is

1: The front cover : this is often taken up with a big picture it is usually of something related to the magazine or it is just a picture of someone looking happy.

2 : Down the side there is details about the content and information that is going to be in the magazine but it is mainly about the main story and if there is any free gifts it tells you what it is.

3 : The title on the front screen in the same font every issue but it can change colour every issue also if there is a logo there is the publisher logo and the price of the magazine usually the title is a little covered up by the picture because people can usually tell what it is from the layout of the front cover and the start and end of the title.

4 : The full contents of what is in the magazine is usually featured on the page directly after the front cover except in some magazines they tend to be a few pages in after adverts. Also the back page is usually a full page of adverts.

I will use this information to aid the creation of my own magazine as i will make sure that my magazine includes all of these but also that it has a professional look to it meaning that it looks like something you would buy in a shop and pay a decent amount of money for the reason behind this is because i want people to take my magazine seriously but also i want my magazine to appeal to my intended audience of teenagers and young adults.

Common formats of magazines

ALL MAGAZINES HAVE A FEW THINGS IN COMMAN AND THESE ARE:

1: advertisements  magazine  companies get money from advertising companies as they pay them to put there advertisements in there magazine this means that the magazine companies can sell the magazines to you a little cheaper.

2: features : articles that tackle topics in depth. they are different in each issue. they will relate to the main issues of the target audience for instance soul and spirit has a constant feature in it that tells you what your dream could mean and how you could interpret it and it has different meanings for certain dreams in each issue.

3: editorials : these are something else that you will see within a magazine. These are were the editor of the articles will introduce the main topic discussed . They also give the editors opinion and hints as to what the next issue may be about.

4: another common feature in magazines is a problems page were you write in with your problems and someone answers or gives advise on them.

I will use this information to make sure that my magazine has and conforms to all the common formats that are expected to be in a magazine so that it looks like a professional magazine.

why magazines are popular

Near enough all magazines are popular but magazines are different and can he on any subject imaginable ranging from subjects and information from Airplane-spotting to Zebra farming or from Pop magazines to Spiritual one’s.

Magazines are also popular with the public as these can be used as a source of information or simply just used as a form of relaxation and escape from the world around them.

In this day and age due to the public interest in the affairs and day to day life of celebrity’s lifestyles the interest in gossip magazines is a major impact on the sales of magazines

I will use this information to help me with my magazine by making sure that my magazine is a source of information why still being used for simple relaxation reading or as an escape from a hard day, also i will also make sure that it pulls on peoples imagination and makes them imagine what it was like back then but also to try and make them feel like they are actually there.
